This letter was written by Kurt Vonnegut in Nov. 1973 to the head of the school board in Drake, NC Charles McCarthy after his book Slaughterhouse Five was deemed to have "obscene language" and all copies the school had been using for English Class were burned. I picked this letter because I am interested in the Conservative reaction to the hippie/anti-war movement. This illustrates this conflict within the education system.  I'm also interested in looking into what makes up the image of a social movement and I think that books definitely play into that. In general burning books is done to make a statement, so where does it fit into the scheme of acceptable or unacceptable protest?  I feel like this specific incident and the reaction to it could be helpful in illustrating a larger phenomena or understanding of the time period.
