When I saw that our topic focused on diary entries and letters, I knew that I wanted to focus on identity and self presentation. As we had discussed in class, stories represent so much personal depth to them. Because my topic remains in topics related to what it "feels" to be American and "what might be considered BEING American," my intention for my scholarly source was to provide a perspective on someone trying to reach just that. The reasoning behind demonstrating a perspective remains in the juxtaposition between what people of you as, and the identity that you chose to hold. For this article in particular, Guillermo Gómez-Peña starts off by saying that he has always been "interested in looking for ways to operate as an artist in the public sphere." There is even a mentioning of "Dual Citizenship" as one of his projects.
Gómez-Peña details his perspective through written radio chronicles in order to present himself as a "performance artist." He links his personal story with the historically acclaimed events as well (such as 9/11). He continues his story about the racial discrimination he endured, noting how physical appearance overtook most of people's judgments over him. He adds different pieces of media, such as pictures and captions, radio conversations, and cultural references. I really like how he repeats terms about his identity (such as performance artist) by means of displaying his own confidence and authenticity over his qualities. His letters are very conversational, filled with humor and indirect theorist thought that does a huge insight into his life on mixed feelings on identity and self presentation.
