When I was most recently in San Francisco, my friend and I happened upon the Frank Lloyd Wright house on Maiden Lane. We were slightly familiar with the location, and Maiden Lane is an intriguing place with its own salacious history. In any case, the only free thing to check out was the Xanadu Gallery, housed inside the FLW building and containing various ethnographic works from Asia, Africa and the Americas.
I love finding places of historical and cultural relevance in intersections that one would not typically see coming. First of all, Maiden Lane in San Francisco is the street where businessmen would treat their mistresses out for fine dining, high fashion shopping sprees and jewel purchases. Secondly, the Frank Lloyd Wright house is incredibly valuable in its own architectural value - the building was primarily preserved due to its incredible storefront as well as its beautiful interior acoustics. The items in the collections are simply priceless, all entirely authentic pieces from around the world that vary from everyday pieces to weaponry to more arbitrary pieces and jewellery. For such a small area, there is a lot of personality present.
