Go By the Name Of...
What caught my attention about this particular interview was the irony in which Ramon told the story. Who knows if there was actually an administrative meeting called to change the name of Facando-- if it is a hyperbole, it still speaks to the identity struggle that Ramon and many Mexican-American children faced in 1950s America. What Ramon shares is a fight over language and more personally, selfhood.
The fight over namesake reminds me of the movie series Roots with the famous scene of Kunta Kinte--the significance of changing ones name is equivalent to changing oneself.
