This article, Trust Act Signed in California to limit Deportation Program, references the bill that Gov. Jerry Brown
signed called the “Trust Act” on October 2013. Based on the article, this act “limits
the state's cooperation with Secure Communities, a federal program that allows
the Department of Homeland Security to access fingerprints taken by local
police, to screen detained individuals for immigration status and to request
that law enforcement agencies hold them if they're found to be undocumented.”
The article also mentions that this same bill was addressed and reviewed last
year, but the governor had deemed it “fatally flawed.” Now with new additions
to the classification of crimes/offenses and other factors, the bill has been
signed. I am really interested in how Foley and Planas (writers of the article)
contribute quotes from certain political representatives and links to specific
bills, government programs, and even a personal story from an undocumented
citizen. In doing so, I was able to engage in the background setting of such an
event instead of just reading titles and dates. I was most interested with the
advantages that the undocumented immigrant community would gain, while also
being aware of the flaws to such benefits.
